Ahead of the much anticipated 2020 senatorial elections in the country, the political leader of the opposition political party, the Alternative National Congress (ANC) has announced that the party will feature a formidable candidate in Maryland County.
Although the ANC is contemplating on featuring candidates in all of the 15 political subdivisions, but Mr. Alexander Benedict Cummings is definite that the party will have candidate in the 2020 senatorial race in Maryland County.
Addressing citizens of Maryland County residing in Montserrado County, Mr. Cummings called on the exuberance citizens to do all they can to ensure the party wins the lone seat in the 2020 senatorial race.
Speaking on the development needs of the citizens, Mr. Cummings assured the citizens that he will work in Maryland County as requested by them. He added “I will commit to spend more times in Maryland County. I want us to work together to change Maryland County and it begins with the 2020 elections. ANC will have a candidate in the county because I feel at home,” he said.
Mr. Cummings who is a son of Maryland County was embraced by his kinsmen with traditional Grebo songs and the sharing of kola nuts as a sign of purity and willingness to work together.
In a statement read at the occasion, the citizens from the four political districts of the county residing in Montserrado County expressed their deepest regret for the ANC defeat in 2017 presidential and legislative elections.
“We want you to take courage and commit yourself to the political process of our country as all is not lost. There is Grebo proverb that says one-time cut cannot remove the bark of a tree and so, the struggle for the emancipation of our people from socio-economic, education, infrastructure and political backwardness should be vigorous from this point with total involvement of many of us in this hall today,” the citizens said in a statement read over the weekend in Monrovia.
They recounted that the defeat of the ANC came from a lot of factors, saying “there were some people who made political commitment to other candidates that were in the race before the pronouncement of your candidacy. Those who made commitment to other presidential candidates couldn’t easily make U-turn because it was tantamount to deception. Now the storm is over, we all are going to find our rightful political space.”
They assured Mr. Cummings that they will work with his team to ensure the victory of the party in the 2020 senatorial race and the 2023 presidential and legislative elections. They added “nothing; absolutely nothing is going to stop us, so help us God.”
The excited citizens however warned Mr. Cummings to take time and build the party around competent and committed people and not self-seeking people.
Meanwhile, the assembled citizens outlined some of the challenges confronting the county as severe hunger due to lack of investment, that Maryland doesn’t have factory since the departure of the Sugar company (LIBSUCO) from Maryland, lack of vocational school since Tubman Technical College was changed to Tubman University among others.
